I'm on Strike!

Sometime in sociology today, I made an important decision.

I'm on strike as a woman. I don't want to be a woman for now (I'll leave room to change my mind); I'd like to be a man.

Before you get all your panties in a twist, let me explain. I don't want a sex-change or anything like that--what I am refering to is not in any way tied to genitalia; it's about societal treatment.

I want to be a social male.

Why, do you ask? I think the answer is relatively obvious; but let me explain.

I want to be paid the same amount as all the other men, not 70% of what they earn for the same job. I don't want to have to do the majority of the child-raising; after a hard day of work, I'd really like to be able to come home, put up my feet, and relax, not fold laundry or scrub floors.(currently, women still do the vast majority of housework, regardless of the demographic). I don't really want to have to deal with that whole child-raising business, so I'd like to leave that to someone else. I don't want it to be my fault if I make half of a baby that will eventually become a little person. I'd like to have the sexual freedom of a man, without needing to feel tied-down to any one spouse.

So, I've decided I'm on strike as a woman and would now most definitely like to be a man.

Oh yea, read this, too. I think it sums it all up for me.

Why I Want a Wife by Judy Syfers (1971)

(Editors Note: This classic piece of feminist humor appeared in the premier issue of Ms. Magazine and was widely circulated in the women's movement.)

I belong to that classification of people known as wives. I am A Wife.

And, not altogether incidentally, I am a mother. Not too long ago a male friend of mine appeared on the scene fresh from a recent divorce. He had one child, who is, of course, with his ex-wife. He is looking for another wife. As I thought about him while I was ironing one evening, it suddenly occurred to me that I too, would like to have a wife. Why do I want a wife?

I would like to go back to school so that I can become economically independent, support myself, and if need be, support those dependent upon me. I want a wife who will work and send me to school. And while I am going to school I want a wife to take care of my children. I want a wife a wife to keep track of the children's doctor and dentist appointments. And to keep track of mine, too. I want a wife to make sure my children eat properly and are kept clean. I want a wife who will wash the children's clothes and keep them mended. I want a wife who is a good nurturing attendant to my children, who arranges for their schooling, makes sure that they have an adequate social life with their peers, takes them to the park, the zoo, etc. I want a wife who takes care of the children when they are sick, a wife who arranges to be around when the children need special care, because, of course, I cannot miss classes at school. My wife must arrange to lose time at work and not lose the job. It may mean a small cut in my wife's income from time to time, but I guess I can tolerate that. Needless to say, my wife will arrange and pay for the care of the children while my wife is working.

I want a wife who will take care of my physical needs. I want a wife who will keep my house clean. A wife who will pick up after my children, a wife who will pick up after me. I want a wife who will keep my clothes clean, ironed, mended, replaced when need be, and who will see to it that my personal things are kept in their proper place so that I can find what I need the minute I need it. I want a wife who cooks the meals, a wife who is a good cook. I want a wife who will plan the menus, do the necessary grocery shopping, prepare the meals, serve them pleasantly, and then do the cleaning up while I do my studying. I want a wife who will care for me when I am sick and sympathize with my pain and loss of time from school. I want a wife to go along when our family takes a vacation so that someone can continue care for me and my when I need a rest and change of scene. I want a wife who will not bother me with rambling complaints about a wife's duties. But I want a wife who will listen to me when I feel the need to explain a rather difficult point I have come across in my course of studies. And I want a wife who will type my papers for me when I have written them.

I want a wife who will take care of the details of my social life. When my wife and I are invited out by my friends, I want a wife who take care of the baby-sitting arrangements. When I meet people at school that I like and want to entertain, I want a wife who will have the house clean, will prepare a special meal, serve it to me and my friends, and not interrupt when I talk about things that interest me and my friends. I want a wife who will have arranged that the children are fed and ready for bed before my guests arrive so that the children do not bother us. I want a wife who takes care of the needs of my quests so that they feel comfortable, who makes sure that they have an ashtray, that they are passed the hors d'oeuvres, that they are offered a second helping of the food, that their wine glasses are replenished when necessary, that their coffee is served to them as they like it. And I want a wife who knows that sometimes I need a night out by myself.

I want a wife who is sensitive to my sexual needs, a wife who makes love passionately and eagerly when I feel like it, a wife who makes sure that I am satisfied. And, of course, I want a wife who will not demand sexual attention when I am not in the mood for it. I want a wife who assumes the complete responsibility for birth control, because I do not want more children. I want a wife who will remain sexually faithful to me so that I do not have to clutter up my intellectual life with jealousies. And I want a wife who understands that my sexual needs may entail more than strict adherence to monogamy. I must, after all, be able to relate to people as fully as possible.

If, by chance, I find another person more suitable as a wife than the wife I already have, I want the liberty to replace my present wife with another one. Naturally, I will expect a fresh, new life; my wife will take the children and be solely responsible for them so that I am left free.

When I am through with school and have a job, I want my wife to quit working and remain at home so that my wife can more fully and completely take care of a wife's duties.

My God, who wouldn't want a wife?

Stretched out and fraying at the edges

I feel like someone has stretched out my nerves and has been sawing at them with a very rusting saw.

Eric left at about 8 tonight and came home about 1 drunk. Inebriated. He will tell you he wasn't that incapacitated, but he was stumbling all over himself, couldn't remmember things he'd said a moment before, and couldn't focus very long at all.

The worst part is, he doesn't seem to understand how tremendously this hurts me.

A long while ago, we had a conversation about him drinking, and the possibilities. At the time, I asked him why he hadn't been drinking--he said it was because of me. But now, all of a sudden, he's been drinking. That hurts me to no end.

But mostly what I am feeling is worry. I am worried sick, nauseus, over him. He's underage, for one thing. For another, just general worry, everything is at least 5x riskier when liquor is involved. I can't help but feel he is being self-destructive. I'm terrified of what could happen.

He doesn't even remember that we had minor plans for the night. Immediately before he left for the party, he asked me to sleep with him tonight (slumber-party style, y'all) and we would watch "The Prince and Me." I agreed, and off he went. This implied, to me, that he wouldn't be drinking...or if he did, not much at all...

He doesn't seem to remember those plans now.

It's because of that morbid fear of what might happen that I went with him to the Diner at 1:30. I normally like the Diner, enjoy the cheap food and 50's theme (because it was probably built in the 50s), and like hanging out with my friends. But tonight I absolutely hated it. Hated it. Not just because there were a lot of gussied up Frat and Sorority folks singing together and off-key, but because being near him when he is drunk is absolute agony for me. I kept coming to the verge of tears, choking them back again.

I was so relieved when we left.

I collapsed in a heap of tears outside my room, unable to go in, unable to do anything else. I can't talk to him about it yet, not until at least tomorrow, after he survives his possible hangover. I made the mistake of going to see him; I'm not really sure why I went.

I told him I couldn't stay and talk, not yet, when he finally noticed I was upset. He didn't understand why. Right before I left, I asked him, pleadingly, not to leave his room again. This made him mad, and he promised, ferociously, not to leave his room "until you come get me out." At this point I left; I wanted to slam the door... I have never wanted to strike him more than that moment.

Eric, if/when you read this, don't you dare comment. We, hopefully, will talk about this tomorrow...

Conquest, abandon, housewife, pills and friendship, tears

I have taken over Eric's dorm room. I am sitting at his roommate's desk, typing on Eric's computer, and listening to his music. Earlier, I was watching his tv while lying on his bed. Britt suggested I put some of my clothes in half of his closet, just to pysch him out. We are a close couple, but not THAT close, and that kind of gesture would terrify him to no end. Haha! But I don't think I'll do that (just yet). He is out for the night, and I am in. And I'm enjoying myself much much more than I should be. I just haven't had the chance to be alone in a long while, mostly because Meaghan-the-roommate never really leaves. I'm relishing my alone time.

That said, don't think this comment is weird. I feel a bit abandoned. As much as I sometimes just need alone time, I am also a bit sad because I feel like a lot of the time, I am forgotten. One person, all day, has sought me out. Since Eric left the room a little bit ago, 3 or 4 people have come looking for him. I feel like regardless of what I do, it doesn't seem to be enough to be remembered, for people to think "you know, I bet Megan would really like to do this" and go out of their way to invite me.

Mikey just left for an 80s party at one of the clubs, and, before he left, he noticed that I don't tend to go out on the weekends, seeming mildly surprised. I said no one really invites me to go anywhere. For instance, Mikey didn't invite me to go with him to the club, Eric didn't invite me to go to his party (but that is forgiveable, because I don't tend to like that particular kind of party....but still, the point is that I wasn't invited). Steph and I were talking about this last weekend (or was it the week before that?) We both talked about how we feel like the housewives out of our group of friends--everyone else goes out and we are left at home to mind the children and the house and the drunkards, when they come home. But it is never expected that the housewives might like to be invited to ...anything...whether or not they'd like to go... it's just out of the question...it isn't even a question. It's as much of a possibility as a black Catholic Communist to be in the KKK. It just isn't even considered!

But Steph and I feel bad, sometimes, to a degree. We just like to be remembered....we do exist, and we'd like people to acknowledge that sometimes.

Steph isn't here now, either. She went home after having to go to the hospital, again, for overdosing on her medication. I'm so worried about her. She was my first friend here, and quite possibly is the truest. But things happen to her, things that would be hard for anyone to deal with, on top of her attempts to figure herself out. And she is struggling, struggling so much.

I'm very worried about her and emailed and called her; she's fine and will be home soonish. But what bothers me is that other people don't seem to be as worried, even the people who are supposed to be her friends. I told Will, one of her confidantes, that she was gone, and since then he has plagued me, trying to tell me to cheer up and quit worrying. I feel like he is being completely heartless, telling me not to worry about my friend in very deep trouble. He says I shouldn't worry because there is "nothing I can do about it." But I don't think that is true at all. I think the thing I can, and should, do is express my concern for her and let her know I am her friend no matter what...which I have done. I can't just sit back, shrug my shoulders, and say, "eh, what can you do? People will do what they do." I don't know, but I don't think I'm really out of line for expecting people who are her friends to be concerned for her welfare.

And I think it is sad that her roommate, who is always working and otherwise is always out of the room, is out at a party tonight. Not sad that she is out having fun--that's fine and good--but sad that next to Steph's note to her on their message board explaining that she'll be gone until Tuesday, probably, her roommate wrote a note like "Looking for fun tonight! Call the cell!" I just think it is a sad commentary on the pull of relationships in that room.

...
And for something totally different but yet not. Today I had the obsurd notion that I wanted to wear a skirt, something I hardly ever ever do. I just have a general uneasiness with wearing said clothing and so, in general, don't. But today, something got into my head that I was going to wear a skirt regardless of all of my perceived flaws. So I did. I met with near-total collapse a little after donning my said outfit when a friend of mine, upon seeing me, loudly exclaimed "What, did you run out of clothes?" I know he was kidding and was legitimately surprised, but his comment really really got to me and added to all my insecurities I feel are more exposed when I'm in a skirt. That is why, later on, when I saw Eric and he told me I looked beautiful, I burst into tears. Huge blubbering tears. And then I had to explain to him that he hadn't said anything wrong, no, I'm not sad because of him, I was just upset. But that must have been hard to understand, because I was hiccupping for air and streaming crocodile tears. When I'd calmed down a bit, I tried to explain why I had cried--I couldn't believe that he really thinks I'm beautiful, when I feel like, at best, I'm a plain jane. And how I'm so happy he does think I'm pretty (or better) but that I just don't understand it.

It's times like that I'm glad I'm with him and not someone else.

And I don't (really) want any comments trying to convince me I'm the greatest thing since sliced bread, or, worse, comments telling me looks aren't everything, blah blah blah. I know they aren't (and that I'm not) but it's nice to know that people think I'm attractive. And I don't know that I really cried just because of that comment or anything--if you've been reading the post so far, you should have picked up on the fact that there are a lot of things stressing me out so far this week. And my friend's comment was just one of his knee-jerk comments and he didn't mean it; and besides, Eric says it's karma getting back on me for my quasi-mean comment about his haircut a week or two ago. (but I apologized for that! AND, he said he thought it was more funny than anything--Eric said he was lying about that)

All right, so I'm depressing, so I'm going to go read or something to stop writing about the things that are upsetting me in my life. Have a good day.

This quiz below this is really dumb. Read it if you want, but I really want you to read the post immediately below that one.
Carry on.

Dumb love quiz

The Sonnet
Deliberate Gentle Love Dreamer (DGLDf)

Romantic, hopeful, and composed. You are the Sonnet. Get it? Composed?

Sonnets want Love and have high ideals about it. They're conscientious people, caring & careful. You yourself have deep convictions, and you devote a lot of thought to romance and what it should be. This will frighten away most potential mates, but that's okay, because you're very choosy with your affections anyway. You'd absolutely refuse to date someone dumber than you, for instance.
Lovers who share your idealized perspective, or who are at least willing to totally throw themselves into a relationship, will be very, very happy with you. And you with them. You're already selfless and compassionate, and with the right partner, there's no doubt you can be sensual, even adventurously so.

You probably have lots of female friends, and they have a special soft spot for you. Babies do, too, at the tippy-top of their baby skulls.

ALWAYS AVOID: The 5-Night Stand, The False Messiah, The Hornivore, The Last Man on Earth

CONSIDER: The Loverboy
